Courtesy Modern Art Oxford; Kiki Smith, After about an hour of interviewing Kiki Smith in her as-yet-unfinished three-storey studio in a former train depot in a quiet rural town in upstate New York, I finally muster the courage to ask the question I have been dying to ask since we sat down to talk.

These small bronze statues not much bigger than crows were displayed in Central Park, perched on boulders, during the 2002 Whitney Biennial. So I started to cast her and draw her, and she said you can do anything but put extra hair on me. Smith, who likes to work with family and friends, calls it ancestor worship. Smith has said that when making Mary Magdalene she was inspired by depictions of Mary Magdalene in Southern German sculpture, where she was depicted as a "wild woman". But a lot of the time as an artist, you go all over the world and youre with people who are very nice, but theyre not people who you know intimately at all, so its slightly like youre a ghost going through your life.
Smith's interest in the elemental functions of the human body, particularly with female anatomy, merges with her Feminist perspective, and the iconography of her Catholic religion in her sculpture, Virgin Mary.
Her father was minimalist sculptor Tony Smith and her mother was Jane Lawrence, an American actress and opera singer working in Germany at the time Kiki was born. Its a miracle to teach. Its an immense freedom. I would always say, You better move out of the way because Im like a double-edged razor blade on my own trajectory and I cant stop. [laughs] But now I sit around thinking about I dont know what.
